How to Get More Followers on Instagram: 9 Steps

Most Instagram accounts stall for the same few reasons: a profile that does not say what it is for, posts that nobody would send to a friend, and no reason for a visitor to stay. Fix those first. Everything else, paid or free, works better on top of them.

1. Make the profile answer one question

A visitor decides in a few seconds whether to follow. Your name field, bio and first row of posts should tell them what they will get if they do. The name field is searchable, so put a word people would search for next to your name.

2. Post reels people would send

Reels reach people who do not follow you yet. The ones that travel furthest are the ones viewers send to someone else: a tip that solves a problem, a joke that fits a group chat, a before-and-after. Ask yourself who a viewer would forward this to. If there is no answer, rework it.

3. Keep the first second busy

Viewers scroll past a slow opening. Start on the most interesting frame, put the point in on-screen text, and cut anything that is only a warm-up.

4. Use up to five precise hashtags

Instagram now caps captions at five hashtags. Pick specific tags that describe the post over broad ones like #reels. Our guide to Instagram hashtags goes through choosing them.

5. Post on a rhythm you can keep

Three good posts a week you can sustain beat a daily schedule you drop in a fortnight. Check Insights for when your followers are online and post shortly before that.

6. Reply to every comment early on

Comments in the first hour start conversations, and conversations bring people back. Replying also gives a new visitor a reason to think you are worth following.

7. Collaborate with accounts your size

A collab post appears on both profiles. Pairing with an account of similar size in a related niche puts you in front of people already interested in your topic.

8. Turn profile visits into follows

Pin your three best posts. Use story highlights as a menu. If people visit and leave without following, fix the profile before chasing more reach.

9. Decide whether a starting boost helps

A brand-new account with zero followers can look abandoned even when the content is good. Some people use a small paid order to get past that first empty stage. It breaks Instagram's terms and does not replace any of the steps above, so weigh it carefully. Our article on whether buying Instagram followers is worth it sets out both sides.

If you do decide to, the Instagram followers page explains each service, its refill and what to expect before you order.
